- Full disclosure: I am not a health professional so all opinions here are just my own snacking preferences. While not all strictly "healthy", these are much better options than chowing down on a corn dog! -
I have a confession to make: I am a chronic snacker. According to recent studies this is not such a bad thing. As long as you snack right and don't over do it on the "bad for you" stuff, snacking can actually help you to maintain a healthy weight. Over the years, I've found some great snacking options that I would love to share with you here. Read on for a comprehensive list of my favorite snacks.
1. Fruit, fruit, and fruit
Okay, this one is pretty easy and everyone knows that fruit is generally a good option for snacking. However, I know quite a few people who say they dislike fruit and therefore stay away from this nutrient rich food. The key here is experimenting with different kinds and varieties. We live in a great age where we have access to amazing produce from all over the world. I didn't grow up eating mangoes, kiwis, or papayas but I tried them as an adult and have since added them into my snacking routine. Get out and smell the roses and taste the fruit!
2. Almonds, pistachios, walnuts, etc.
Again, this is an easy one and I'll echo my same advice from above: try all the varieties. You may think you're not a fan of nuts but have you really tried all of the amazing varieties out there? I didn't think so. Go try them now!
3. Boom Chicka Pop
I still can't believe it took me so long to try out this delectable popcorn brand. A friend actually introduced me to the Kettle Corn flavor and I was hopelessly hooked. I now have at least one bag of every flavor in my pantry.
4. String Cheese, cottage cheese, yogurt
A lot of people think cheese is evil and we need to stay far away from it. But unless you have a lactose intolerance or allergy, cheese and dairy is a great source of calcium. Find a yogurt that is not loaded with sugar...there are lots of kinds out there. String cheese and cottage cheese come in reduced fat versions too.
5. Sun Tropics Coco Rolls
Another brand that I can't believe it took me so long to discover. I recently found out about this brand and now I can't stop eating their light and airy Coco Rolls. Available in several flavors including espresso, this is a great option with minimal ingredients.
6. Sun Tropics Banana Chips
This tasty brand offers more than just their coco rolls, they also have banana chips in a variety of flavors like Sea Salt and Original.
7. Trader Joe's Vegetable Root Chips
Okay, so chips are not the healthiest option but sometimes you have a craving that you need to fulfill. Instead of gorging on potato chips, I've made an easy switch to this healthier alternative and I think I actually like them better.
These are just some of the favorite healthy(ish) snacks and I'll be adding more as I discover new items. Share your favorite snacks below!
